Discipleship Is SCARY!

Discipleship is uncomfortable and even scary…! It’s not for the “faint-hearted”…

Therefore, those who claim that to be a Christian is the “COOL” thing to do, really don’t know what they’re talking about, and certainly misunderstand the implications of becoming a Christian.

Being a Christian is to be a true disciple of Christ. But, discipleship has its cost, namely, MY WILL

In Luke 6:46, Jesus asks a profound question: “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” This question cuts to the very essence of discipleship: the daily and constant challenge of my submission to the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of my life.

By nature, we resist obedience. We want to follow our desires, pursue our plans, and maintain control. Yet, through the rebirth by the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to do what we naturally cannot: to yield our will to Christ and trust Him to lead, even in areas we hesitate to surrender.

Practically, submitting to Christ’s lordship means giving Him permission to have the final say in all matters—whether it’s our personal plans, fears, or ambitions. It requires us to trust Him enough to alter or even cancel our plans when He sees fit. This doesn’t come naturally, but as we daily learn to obey Him, we grow in understanding that His ways are higher and always for His glory and “our good.”

Jesus commissions His disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 to “make disciples of all the nations… teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” Discipleship is about teaching others, and ourselves, to live under Christ’s lordship—an ongoing, transformative journey of obedience and trust.

True discipleship is not just calling Him “Lord” but living as though He truly is. Through surrender and obedience, we experience the fullness of the life He promises.
